Endometrial Biopsy: What is the test used for? Who would most likely benefit from it?

An endometrial biopsy is utilized to obtain tissue from inside the uterus for evaluation. It helps to see if the uterine lining (the endometrium) is normal or not. Abnormalities that may be detected include polyps, fibroids, precancerous cells and cancer. The endometrial biopsy may also be utilized during a fertility work-up to determine if the lining would be hospitable to a growing embryo.
Often called a Pipelle, named after the straw-like instrument that may be used by your physician, an endometrial biopsy is performed in the office setting. Cramps, some times strong, mostly tolerable are common.

Younger woman with persistent abnormal bleeding, women nearing menopause with abnormal bleeding, women in menopause with any bleeding, women taking medications that raise the risk for endometrial cancer and women undergoing fertility evaluation.
