Is using meal replacement products healthy?
In general, meal replacements do not provide the same benefits that a diet full of fruits, vegetables, lean protein and whole grains can. While many meal replacements do contain vitamins and minerals, they do not contain the levels of disease-fighting phytonutritents that are found in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Phytonutrients can protect against some types of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and other chronic diseases. Many are also high in sodium. However, some meal replacements may be helpful on a short term basis to assist with weight management. Look for those with natural ingredients that are low in sodium and add 2 cups of vegetables to each meal replacement you consume. Better yet, batch cook foods in larger quantities at home and freeze in single serving containers for a quick and healthy option.
