Cervical Cancer

For two years, and at least 5 healthcare providers, I was diagnosed with early stage cervical cancer. For two years I had constant heavy bleeding and was told that it was just perimenapausal symptoms and was prescribed Provera and when that didn't work I was given Estrogen. This was repeated several times. The hormones affected my moods and it got to the point that all I could do was lock myself in my room and cry. My concerned husband demanded that the doctors find out what was wrong with me and threw the hormone pills and told the doctors that if they put me on one more hormone pill he was going drop me off and let them deal with my mood swings caused from the hormones. My family physician was not happy with the diagnoses that I was getting and referred me to a new visiting OB/GYN. It was her that finally found out my problem after being misdiagnosed and given incorrect treatment. She gave me a routine Pap test and I wasn't too worried because I had religously gone in every year and every time it was normal, except this time. We went through the biopsy and LEEP procedures only to find that the biopsy results after the LEEP were exactly the same as before. At first she was going to do watchful waiting to see if the condition improved, but a month later she called me and was no longer comfortable waiting and wanted to do a hysterectomy as soon as possible. It had progressed from CIN 1 to carcinoma in situ of the cervix in two months' time. I don't like to think about the results if we would have waited. I am a firm believer in being your own health advocate. You know your body better than anyone and when something is not right it is up to you to seek the answers that you need.
