Are You Ready To Rock A Non-Toxic Summer?

Summer is officially here and my kids are over the moon for it!! The outdoor play has begun! Longer, warmer days, pools, sun, bubbles, lemonade stands!! It’s all happening. I know if you are reading this blog you care about what you put in, on and around your family. Here is a list of quick tips to help keep you and your family toxin-free:

Sun, fun and the beach: Remember hats and sunscreen. My personal favorite sunscreen is Badger Broad Spectrum. However, the EWG (Environmental Work Group) did a terrific study on sunscreens and has a very informative article. It tells you the harmful ingredients to stay away from and gives a nice choice of non-toxic sunscreens to choose from.

Outdoor play: I make a bug spray from lavender water and add essential oils (I’ll include the recipe at the end). In case of bug bites, I use Hyland’s Bug Bite Ointment. It is a homeopathic stick and it works great. With outdoor play usually comes rolling on the grass. Be mindful what you or your gardner is spraying on the lawn. Go pesticide free.

Pool fun: Nowadays there are great alternatives to the traditional chlorinatedpool. Chlorine has been linked to higher levels of asthma . Some of the alternatives would be ozone, saltwater (lower chlorine) and now there is a company called Total Habitat that builds gorgeous pond like pools. The pondlike pools are kept clean by circulating the water through plants!!! I love that!!

Foods: Take advantage of all the gorgeous organic summer fruits, vegetables and melons that are in season. Try and buy organic, but for sure stay away from GMO’s. I’ll put up a few great, easy summer recipes next week!

For now enjoy your summer. Stay safe and keep your environment free of chemicals!! Have a wonderful 4th of July!!!
