Dr. Larry Maxwell is Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Inova Fairfax Hospital. He received his medical degree with honors from the University of North Carolina and completed his internship and residency with the military at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. For his fellowship, he trained in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. Maxwell has authored and co-authored of over 65 manuscripts and chapters and has received six awards by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the President’s Award by the Society of Gynecologic Oncology for his research. Dr. Maxwell's research interests have predominantly involved endometrial carcinogenesis as well as thromboembolism prevention in cancer. He has previously received the Surgeon General's award, an honor that is annually bestowed on only four army officers in the entire United States Army.  Dr. Maxwell is an adjunct investigator in the Laboratory of Biosystems and Cancer at the Cancer Institute, where he oversees his own research activities.

Dr. Maxwell is the Director of Gynecologic Surgical Services for the National Cancer Institute in a memorandum of understanding between the National Cancer Institute and the U.S. Army that enables provision of gynecologic surgical care to patients on NCI Gynecologic protocols. Dr. Maxwell serves as the Vice-Chair of the IRB for the United States Military Cancer Institute as well as the Principal Investigator for the following three research consortia: Molecular Biology and Prevention of Endometrial Cancer, Gynecologic Cancer Center for the Study of Racial Disparities and Gynecologic Disease Programs.
