Dr. Mercedes Castiel

Dr. Mercedes Castiel is the Head of General Gynecology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.  She is a board-certified gynecologist with a multifaceted clinical practice. She provides general gynecologic care to cancer patients at Memorial Sloan-Kettering and also cares for women who are at high risk for gynecologic cancers due to their personal or family histories.

Dr. Castiel developed a program that helps women with acute gynecologic needs and survivorship issues to manage menopausal symptoms, addresses their hereditary risk, refers them for screening evaluations, and promotes their sexual health during and after treatment.  Dr. Castiel also has expertise in helping women to manage the symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes and night sweats and the increased risk of osteoporosis that can occur after menopause or is due to cancer treatment. Dr. Castiel cares for both young women whose early-onset menopause is related to cancer therapy and older women who have reached menopause naturally but whose choices for managing symptoms are limited because of their cancer histories.  Her research interests include investigating ways to maximize the quality of life of menopausal patients who have been treated for cancer and who are not candidates for hormone therapy.
