Fragrance...simple pleasure or complex problem?

One of the most shocking pieces of information I have come across on my health journey concerns fragrance. It is an ingredient that we are all used to seeing and enjoying. How many times have I opened a bottle of shampoo, lotion or a candle and oooohhhh’d and aaaahhhhhh’d at the smell...never once wondering what went into making that lovely smell. I went to a lecture by a doctor on this exact subject and came away with a much more critical nose. The word “fragrance” is protected by trade secret laws and is therefore exempt from ingredient disclosure requirements. At the moment, the cosmetics industry has 3,100 chemicals at their disposal. They also have the right to keep them a secret. We have the right to know what we are putting on our bodies and allowing to be absorbed into our systems. Since the industry is still allowed to use these chemicals, I have looked for alternatives and found so many items that are wonderful. For my home I use a nebulizer and 100% essential oils, releasing a lovely smell into the house. I am able to use different oils depending on the time of year and mood that I am in. I also now use essential oils on my body. At the moment I am very attached to my tuba rose oil. The smell is gorgeous and more importantly it is safe. I also make a point to buy soy candles that are scented with essential oils. An interesting side effect is that now when I smell “fragrance” it smells so synthetic. It really doesn’t smell as good as it once did. It smells like chemicals. I feel so inspired by striving for a chemical free lifestyle and hope you do too!
