The Bush administration is not known for giving high-profile jobs to abortion rights advocates. But comedian Fran Drescher, she of the famously annoying nasal whine and star of the hit series "The Nanny" a few years back, has a new government gig. The State Department on Monday named Drescher, a uterine cancer survivor and women's health advocate, as a U.S. public diplomacy envoy. She will join the likes of Cal Ripken Jr. and skating star Michelle Kwan, touring the world and boosting America's image.

The department said Drescher will work on women's health issues, cancer awareness and detection, and patients' rights. She is off to Romania, Hungary, Kosovo and Poland later this month and told reporters she expects to visit the Middle East, Africa and Latin America.

Fran Drescher will represent the United States abroad.
No word yet on whether that's a speaking role.
